Red-Eyed Tree Frog
Amphibians can be found all around us, I bet you’ve seen frogs or toads near you. Have you ever held one or touched one?
Well today we are zooming in on Red-Eyed Tree Frogs. These amazing amphibians can be found in Central America and just like the Sloth we learned about the other day, they live in the rainforest.
Red-Eyed Tree Frogs are so beautiful that their name actually means “beautiful tree nymph.” They are very good at camouflage. During the day they tuck their brightly colored limbs under their green bodies and close their red eyes. When they do this, they blend into the leaves around them.
Can you see how they do this in the picture below?
Red-Eyed Tree Frogs are nocturnal, which means they are awake at night. When they search for insects to eat at night, their amazing red eyes and sticky long tongues help them catch enough to eat.
Let’s listen in to see what challenge Carl the Red-Eyed Tree frog encounters!
It’s time for a Red-Eyed Tree Frog out of this world fact!
Well, we often think of frogs in the rainforest as poisonous. Bright colors often warn us of poisonous critters. But, the Red-Eyed Tree Frog is not poisonous. These are very fun pets as well!
Time for a Challenge
Let’s play a game of leapfrog. Grab a friend and give this a try.
One person lays down in a ball like a sleeping Red-Eyed Tree Frog. Scrunch up your legs!
The other person tries to hop over the sleeping frog. To get a good jump, place your hands on the sleeper’s back and open up your legs like a tunnel.
How many leaps did you do? Don’t forget to share! #heymrjim
