Bobwhite Quail

It’s so interesting how a Bobwhite Quail actually says its own name when it calls.  These little game birds look kind of like chickens, but have some pretty amazing and unique features.

If you like birds or just love interesting animal facts, this is for you! Let’s Go!

Bobwhite Quail live in families called coveys, and you can find them in Eastern or Southern United States.  Unlike many birds we see outside our windows, they live and build their nests on the ground.  They actually are not very good fliers so the ground is much easier for them.

When we think of predators, we often think of big scary animals with sharp teeth.  BUT, Bobwhite Quail have a very tiny predator called the fire ant!  Fire ants are very dangerous for these birds because they destroy their nests and feast on their eggs.

Will Cruz and Vienna the Bobwhite quail find a safe place for their eggs?

Let’s learn some Bobwhite Quail out of this world facts!

Not only do these amazing birds lay up to 20 eggs in their nests, they are such skilled builders that they often weave dry grass or weeds to form an arch around the nest. This hides the nest from direct view of enemies!

Time for a Challenge

Let's play a game of bobwhite hide-and-seek.  This game also has a marco-polo twist if you’ve ever played this game.

All you need is a friend or family member to play along with you.

  1. Take turns being the counter and the hidder.

  2. The counter counts to 20 while the hidder runs to find a hidden nesting spot.

  3. Instead of shouting “ready or not here I come,” shout “bobwhite.”

  4. The hidder shouts “bobwhite” back to help give a clue.

Where did you hide your nest for this game?
