Remora
Have you ever seen a picture of a whale or a shark with strange little fish dangling off of them? Maybe you’ve even wondered if they were fish at all or some kind of extra fin or algae. Well, today’s adventure takes us deep into the ocean to learn about a type of fish commonly known as the suckerfish. Let’s learn some amazing facts about Remora.
Critter At A Glance
What makes this critter so cool? The Remora does not have something called a swimming bladder. This is something that helps a fish keep its balance to swim across the water. Remora rely on other animals, such as sharks or whales, to give them a ride across the deep blue water. Remora have the ability to latch onto another animal with a strong suction cup mouth. Once they attach to their host they help keep it nice and clean. This is called a symbiotic relationship when both animals help each other.
Do they just eat algae? Remora eat parasites and bits of food on their larger host. What they clean is what they eat.
Do they have any super senses? YES! They use their sense of touch to communicate. They also use smells and other chemicals in the water to communicate with others.

Fishermen sometimes use them to catch fish or sea turtles. The fishermen attach the remora's tail to the fishing line and when the remora suctions to the fish or turtle, they pull in both of these animals!
