Green Tree Python
Have you ever climbed a tree? How about a tree way up in the treetop canopy of the rainforest? Well, today we are headed to the LAND DOWN UNDER. If you’re ready for an adventure, come along and let's catch the next flight to the Cape York Peninsula of Australia! We are getting ready to learn about an animal whose favorite spot is way up in the trees, it’s called the Green Tree Python!
Critter At A Glance
What is special about this critter of the rainforest? Green Tree Pythons are known for their bright green colors. They are arboreal, which means they spend most of their time up in the trees. Their skin color helps them camouflage into the rainforest habitat and they are nearly impossible to spot.
What do they eat? These snakes eat lizards, small birds, and small mammals. They use their constricting ability to squeeze their prey once they catch them. They swallow their meal whole and can wait patiently for DAYS to catch their prey. Can you imagine being that still and patient just for a meal?
What else? They live from 15-20 years and never stop growing! These critters shed their skin as they grow. And, even though they are a predator for many small animals, they are actual prey too! Black butcherbirds, rufous owls, and dingoes are just a few animals that snack on these snakes!
