Critter At A Glance

What’s special about this critter?  Garter Snakes grow to be about 30 inches long  and have 3 stripes down their bodies, usually blue, green, yellow or white. Some think they were named after something called garters in the olden days.  Garters were straps used to hold up men’s socks.

What do we know about their babies? mothers give birth to between 10 and 70 live young. The larger the mother snake, the bigger the litter of babies!  Baby snakes do not need their parents to teach them how to survive, they are independent right at birth, even though some stay with their mother for a few days.

How do they survive?  These snakes can be found just about everywhere but water and they hibernate in the cold winter months. They find natural burrows, either in log piles or old rodent burrows, but sometimes come out to warm up their bodies by basking in the sun. They eat mainly fishes, mice, amphibians, and earthworms.
