Clownfish

What’s orange and white but not that funny?

 A Clownfish!

Critter At A Glance

What are the Clownfish’s secret skills?  Clownfish are beautiful tropical fish found in the warm waters of the Indian and Pacific Ocean.  They can be found in the Great Barrier Reef.  One of the coolest things about Clownfish is their ability to withstand stings from Sea Anemone.  They build up a tolerance for the stings and also have a protective sticky film on their scales that protects them.

What does the word ‘SYMBIOTIC’ have to do with Clownfish?  Symbiotic means teaming up so both creatures help eachother in some way.  Clownfish are protected by Sea Anemone because their predators cannot enter them and withstand their stings.  Clownfish also help the Anemone by eating parasites and dead tentacles from them.   This  keeps them clean.

What else do they eat?  Clownfish eat parasites from and dead tentacles from anemone, but they also eat plankton.  They search the water from plankton and algae.

Let’s jump into the story about Douglas.  Can you pick out the clues?

Are you ready for an out of this world fact?

All clownfish are born as males. When the dominant female of a group dies, the largest male will turn itself into a female.
